Haters gotta hate (even horror novels)

Evan Dickson wrote a piece for Bloody-Disgusting.com that spotlighted bad reviews for (nearly) universally beloved horror films.

He says everyone’s entitled to their opinion, and I don’t disagree, but, well, see what you think of the following reviews:

DRACULA

Die-hard vampire fan = Team Edward?

THE COMPLETE STORIES OF EDGAR ALLAN POE

Isn’t criticizing 19th century prose for its fullness the same as criticizing CASABLANCA for being in black and white?

I AM LEGEND

Apparently, ‘st’ is the first casualty.

Not sure there’s much I can say in response.

  1. Amazing! I liked it better in the old days, when people kept their opinions to themselves, unless explicitly asked for it.

    • I hear what you’re saying. It would be nice if we could give everyone a voice without a significant minority being trolls, though. The person who thought Dracula was boring seemed to be treating the review as an exercise in funny ways to say it was boring, instead of actually supporting her opinion. That kind of stuff grinds my gears.

      • People don’t put things in context. They think all arts and entertainment was born in the current decade. It wouldn’t irritate me so much if they had just said, it’s not my style of reading material and I had trouble getting through it. –I guess nothing is sacred. There was a time in my life where I wouldn’t watch many B&W films because I thought they were dated. Ironically, I now seek them out.

      • Right on! A friend of mine won’t watch B/W movies for that very reason, and it makes me want to puke. Slow down and understand the matrix it was made in. That goes for movies, books, music or whatever.

  2. The one that liked I am Legend the movie rather than the book says it all. 🙂
