Review: “Genuine gems” lurk in SHRIEKS & SHIVERS

Posted in Book Reviews, News on July 24, 2015 by Christian

Glenn Dallas of Manhattan Book Review has posted an appraisal of SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS, the latest anthology from The Horror Zine, which features my short story, “Center Stage Sideshow”:

Now available in paperback and Kindle editions.

Now available in paperback and Kindle editions.

A crash tapeworm diet brings unexpected consequences. Horror follows a selfish woman home from the nail salon. Something monstrous haunts the filming of John Carpenter’s THE THING. A heavy rainstorm brings a reckoning for a man who lost his wife. The footsteps of a tragic suicide victim follow a woman. A strange plague tears apart a community. Missing glasses are the least of a man’s worries when an artifact begins affecting him. A Vegas ghost haunts a woman on the eve of her wedding. Social media takes over a man’s life.

SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS covers horror in all its forms, from creeping slow-burn terror to monsters running wild, from body horror and gross-out scares to tales that delve deep into the psyche and unleash fears that haunt us all…

Kirkus: QUALIA NOUS “is of a uniformly high quality”

Posted in Book Reviews, News on April 1, 2015 by Christian

Kirkus Reviews has published a glowing review of Michael Bailey’s latest anthology from Written Backwards, QUALIA NOUS, which features my short story, “Cataldo’s Copy”:

QUALIA NOUS, nominated for a 2014 Stoker Award®.

QUALIA NOUS, nominated for a 2014 Stoker Award®.

In his introduction to this anthology, Bailey grimly ruminates on the nature of the potential immortality of art, even as its creators are condemned to eventual annihilation: “Every author in Qualia Nous will die. Yes, that is blunt, and a horrifying thought, but their words and the worlds they have created will survive (perchance in the infinite).” The liminal space between the infinite and the finite is much on the mind of the writers contained within this volume, including heavy hitters of the genre such as Stephen King, Gene O’Neill, Lucy A. Snyder, Richard Thomas, Jason V. Brock, James Chambers, Pat R. Steiner, and John Everson. With 25 stories, two poems, and four novelettes, the tome is a dense compendium of psychological horror rooted in the realm of hard sci-fi. The anthology offers a particularly literary-minded selection from the genres, with pieces that blend character study and emotionally complex narrative with plot-and-suspense-driven premises…

“Get your fix” of horror with SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS

Posted in Book Reviews, News on February 3, 2015 by Christian

Fangoria has published a nice review of SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS, written by PATRICK actress and horror aficionado Camilla Jackson. The latest anthology edited by Jeani Rector of The Horror Zine features my short story, “Center Stage Sideshow”:

Horror Zine founder and editor, Jeani Rector has masterfully put together a collection of spine-chilling and macabre tales in her third installment of anthologies, SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS FROM THE HORROR ZINE. The bite-sized short stories showcase Rector’s flair as not just an editor, but for seeking out the best in known and up and coming talent in the horror fiction genre in her third offering from THE HORROR ZINE. And although a new publisher is on board for this anthology (Post Mortem Press) the novel still follows the same solid format as the two previous compilations.

Bentley Little (THE REVELATION) gives deserved praise for Rector and her series of anthologies in his foreword that additionally conveys his sadness that this may be the last anthology in the series, concluding that SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS could potentially attain collectors item status, featuring stories from the likes of the next Stephen Kings and Clive Barkers. In John Russo’s (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD) preface, ‘A Word About Zombies’, Russo muses on certain Zombie characteristics that took shape in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD as well as the careful thought and consideration that was put into their fabled idiosyncratic quirks.

Like a sommelier of horror fiction, Rector has placed 31 authors at an equable level, fusing emerging writers with notable scribes such as William F. Nolan, Rena Mason, Elizabeth Massie and Joe McKinney, making this not only diverse in styles, but with the choice of anti-hero stretching from the typical zombie to utterly imaginative and unforeseen takes on the malefactor. Some examples include a ruthless tapeworm, supernatural sideshow freaks…

Read the rest of Jackson’s review here, so you can be sure you’re getting an excellent book … which you totally are. SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS is now available from Post Mortem Press in Kindlepaperback, and hardcover editions. Why not pick up a copy and leave your own review?

SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS is “full of scares, creeps and utterly horrifying things”

Posted in Book Reviews, News on January 26, 2015 by Christian

Goodreads reviewer Dave Granger says SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS, which features my story, “Center Stage Sideshow”, is sure to earn new fans for each contributor. In a review he posted earlier this month on the social cataloging site, Granger wrote:

Now available in Kindle, paperback, and limited edition hardcover.

Jeani Rector has done it again, though this may be the best anthology she’s put together so far. As much as I liked the last one, SHADOW MASTERS, this one is far above that. The stories in here are diverse and well written, full of scares, creeps and utterly horrifying things.

It really has something for everyone. Do you like monsters? Check. Twilight Zone type of stories? Check. Subtle horror? Check. Whatever your taste there’s some great stories in this one you can’t miss. Not to mention a great introduction by Bentley Little and one by John Russo.

Stories in here that can’t be missed are by Ray Garton, William F. Nolan, Jason V. Brock, Shaun Meeks, Christian A. Larsen, Tom Piccirilli, Lisa Morton and really, I loved every single one in this. Going back over the names and stories right now, there’s not a single one I wouldn’t read again. Each writer in here has just earned a new fan.

Available now in Kindle, paperback and limited-edition hardcover from Post Mortem Press, SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS includes a foreword by  Bentley Little (THE INFLUENCE) and an introduction by NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD screenwriter John Russo. Oh, and these stories, too:

If you enjoy the stories in SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS as much as I think you will, I also recommend A FEAST OF FRIGHTS FROM THE HORROR ZINE, also edited by THZ chief Jeani Rector.

SHRIEKS & SHIVERS features “well-crafted horror to satisfy every imagination”

The positive reviews are starting to pile up for SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS, the new anthology from The Horror Zine and Post Mortem Press, which features my own “Center Stage Sideshow”. C. Vale’s five-star review says:

Now available in Kindle, paperback, and limited edition hardcover.

Now available in Kindle, paperback, and limited edition hardcover.

If you stopped me on the street and asked me which is my favorite story from the SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS anthology, Jason V. Brock‘s shocking “Transposition” may “pop” in to my head.

Or I could say that my favorite is Elizabeth Massie‘s “Squatters” where the ignorant and hypocritical meet with brutal consequences. Or it could be Shaun Meeks‘ pulpy “Stash House,” which read a little like a scene from a film noir screenplay (with more than a splash of gruesome horror added). Or the works of Waggoner or Rose or Mason or Piccirilli may have topped my list. The stories are as unique as the people behind them (appreciated the bios and links to author blogs, etc.) and each satisfies a different craving. All of them were swallowed with enjoyment and discomfort in equal measure.

My two favorites today are “Center Stage Side Show” and “One Last Tweet.”

Christian A. Larsen’s “Center Stage Side Show” is told from the border between innocence and sexual awakening. It transports readers back to a time in their own lives when they, in their youth, screwed up the courage to glance behind the curtain and take a peek at the bigger, scarier world previously beyond their reach – and what a nasty world they find here! Mr. Larsen’s old timey yarn leaves an indelible (and sticky) impression…

SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS is “scary and imminently readable”

Posted in Book Reviews, News on January 13, 2015 by Christian

Amazon reader Wesley Irvin has written a five-star review of SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS, the latest anthology from The Horror Zine to feature a short story of mine.

Now available in Kindle, paperback, and limited edition hardcover.

Now available in Kindle, paperback, and limited edition hardcover.

This is one of those short fiction books that goes far above the usual entertainment bar. It isn’t just a collection of finely written, well-edited, painstakingly sculpted literary pieces so perfectly scribed it takes your breath away. But also has material directly related to the craft (my favorite being John Russo‘s, ‘A word about Zombies’).

In my Kindle version I was also able to tap the writer’s names and go directly to their own websites, or find their publishers and websites internet addresses to read even more. Considering you have such greats as Bentley Little, Ray Garton, William F. Nolan, and Tom Piccirilli floating around with the assorted bodies, boogers and boogy men, that’s a pretty big deal…

SHRIEKS & SHIVERS is an “exceptional collection”

SHRIEKS & SHIVERS, which features my short story, “Center Stage Sideshow” has earned a positive review by David Goudsward in HELLNOTES:

SHRIEKS AND SHIVERS FROM THE HORROR ZINE is the third anthology selected from pages of the e-zine by Jeani Rector. Rector is no slouch when it comes to writing horror, with highly respected novels and short stories to her credit, but as an editor and anthologist, she is even better—I might even suggest phenomenal. In five years, she has catapulted THE HORROR ZINE from an innocuous little website into an award-winning e-pub juggernaut, where best-selling scribes (the current issue includes a Piers Anthony story) and lesser-known authors intermingle freely in the table of contents.
